If you still cannot get the controller to function properly it might be time to replace/upgrade. It sounds like when the engine is running there might be more pulling power from the running light circuit and reducing the power running to the camera. You can test this by starting the engine and then testing the voltage at the camera with a multimeter. Since yours is on all the time when connected to your new 7-way that would indicate that you have a short somewhere between where you cut the wire and the 7-way.
